Buying Dry Ice
I bought it for the first time today from a local chain grocery store, but also can be bought at Baskin Robbins and other ice cream places

  • I walked up to the information counter, and told them I needed five pounds
    • Which, by the way, if you are using it right away, is probably too much
      • I used the dry ice at work and had some left over, to try this with
  • Then straight to the check out line to pay for it
    • they made sure I was age appropriate to buy it (18+)
  • Dry Ice sublimates, meaning the carbon-dioxide goes straight from the solid it is to a gas.
  • So, having a cooler to take it home in will help extend it’s life, also make sure you don’t have too many stops before getting home.
  • If you buy it the day before you need it, get twice the amount you will need and pack it in several bags before tucking it into the freezer.
    • Freezers in general are not really cold enough to preserve it for very long

Dry IceWhat is Dry Ice?

  • Carbon dioxide made into a solid,
  • Breathe out. What you breathed out is carbon dioxide.
  • Colder than water when it freezes
  • Should never be touched with bare skin. Tongs, and very thick work gloves are fine

Step one: Empty apple juice into bowl

    Materials
  • For a faster experiment, heat juice.
  • My bowl turned out to be a little to small for my experiment
  • Place bowl in area where it can be observed by, but not touched by small hands

Step two:

    Dry Ice and Juice
  • With tongs, not bare hands, drop a large chunk of dry ice into bowl
  • You can also wrap the dry ice in a cheese cloth and secure with a rubber band to make sure it's not consumed

Step Three:

  • Enjoy watching the magic
    • Do not consume yet!

Step Four

    Sparkling Cider
  • Wait, until all the dry ice is gone (dry ice should not be touching skin, i.e. lips or stomach insides, but with enough time it will all visibly disappear)
    •  starting with hotter juice will speed up the time and it's still cold when done
  • Drink your now carbonated apple juice/sparkling apple cider
  • As a bonus it's ice cold
  • Try it again with a different juice blend
